(Gavia immer) Almost wholly aquatic birds, loons can swim great distances underwater and can pursue prey to a depth of 200 feet. Found singly or in pairs, they grow from 2-3 feet, with both parents sharing incubation. Young often hitch rides on the backs of their parents for a few weeks. They nest along large lakes in northern North America and winter on both coasts and the Gulf of Mexico.
